Interview of Dr. T on Chiropractic and Alternative Medicine
Many people believe that the only way to get well from an illness is to go to the medical doctor, get a prescription and take
medication for a week or two. What if there was a way to prevent getting sick altogether? There are many ways to do this through
natural means. One way is through proper diet and exercise, and by taking the right vitamins and minerals for your body. There is
also another practice that many people overlook until they are injured in a car accident or experience a sports injury. It is known as
chiropractic. My family chiropractor took the time to let me interview him about his work.
The first question I asked Dr. Tullius was, "What does chiropractic claim to treat or cure?" He stated that chiropractic does not
cure anything, but instead chiropractic supports the body and removes interference to the body's natural healing ability. Chiropractic
seeks to find the root cause of illness and remove the cause versus the traditional medical model which treats the symptoms. This
is better for you because drugs aren't always the answer. Wellness care or preventative care, which is what chiropractic falls under,
is constantly seeking optimum health, whether that is through manipulation of the spine, massage, or vitamin supplementation to
name a few methods. Sickness care is when doctors come in and react to the problem.
The next question I asked was what type of credentials does a chiropractor have to be able to administer treatment. Dr. Tullius
decided he wanted to become a chiropractor when he was about fifteen years old. He played sports when he was young and would
see a chiropractor regularly to keep him functioning at a high level. He really enjoyed the atmosphere in the office. It was
completely different from the medical offices he had been to that were very cold and sterile. His chiropractor's office was very warm
and inviting and was always filled with laughter and happy people. The doctor was really nice and took the time to get to know his
patients. He really wanted to help people and knew it was the profession for him. After four years of undergraduate work, he went to
Los Angeles College of Chiropractic. He successfully graduated with a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree and passed the National
Chiropractic Board Examinations. He now owns his own office with his wife who is very supportive of his work.
The next question that followed was, "How is the treatment administered?" Dr. Tullius told me that there are over 100 different
chiropractic techniques depending on the school they go to and additional continuing education courses. Dr. Tullius uses his
hands to adjust or manipulate the spine with a technique known as Diversified. This is done to remove irritation to the nervous
system and decrease muscle spasms. It also breaks up adhesions in the joint capsules. I know some of this sounds painful but
actually feels very good and relaxing. Dr. Tullius told also told me about other methods where a patient doesn't have to hear a
popping sound to be adjusted. This is one reason so many people are scared to get an adjustment. He said that some
chiropractors use a hand held device to adjust the spine and others use very light force to adjust the spine. He stated that he can
use the hand held instrument but prefers to use his hands.
The next question was, "How does chiropractic differ from orthodox medicine?" Dr. Tullius explained that chiropractic's role is to
detect the cause of the problem and then assist the body in removing it. This helps support the body to stay strong and fight off
disease. Orthodox medical procedures usually try to suppress symptoms with medication. They try to remove or add something
that wasn't there to begin with. That is why there are so many side affects that come along with medication. Chiropractic works with
the body, removes interference to the nervous system and neither adds anything to it or takes anything away.
The final question was for me. "Would I use this type of alternative health care?" My answer is yes. When I was in second grade
I was playing on the jungle gym hanging upside down. My legs slipped and I fell right on the top of my head. Luckily nothing was
broken but I suffered from severe migraines. These were the type that knocked out adults and I would have nausea, vomiting,
blurred vision, and sensitivity to light. My parents took me to a chiropractor and my migraines went away. Dr. Tullius took over the
practice of my previous chiropractor and I have seen him for a little over two years. He always finds where the problem is right away.
I believe that if I didn't see him or any chiropractor, I would still be suffering from the severe migraines.
I am twenty years old now and I haven't felt pain like I did when I was a child for many years. I'm not saying that I never get
headaches but now I know the cause and I don't have to constantly medicate myself to get rid of the pain. I strongly agree that there
are other ways to improve health without taking such harmful medications. Thanks to chiropractors like Dr. Tullius, people can be
empowered to acknowledge the body's innate potential to heal itself.
