Getting to the Core of Pilates
With the recent surge of celebrity-endorsed Pilates regimens and products, it would seem as
though this type of exercise was developed within the past few years.  Pilates, however, saw its
beginnings around the turn of the 20th century when a German man named Joseph Pilates, interned
fro being an “enemy alien” worked with those injured in WWI to develop a method of rehabilitating
exercise.  Many of the exercises were focused around isometric muscle contractions and the use of
crude equipment made of bedsprings and barrel staves for resistance.

Pilates found his method extremely effective for a person of any age or ability because of its low to
no impact on the joints.  He eventually brought his ideas to the United States when he opened his
studio in New York City in the mid-1920’s.  He found that dancers and athletes alike were able to
benefit from his “core” or abdominal approach to physical fitness.  His philosophy was that using the
strength from the core was essential to achieving strength throughout the body.

Today, Pilates has a worldwide following, including many athletes and celebrities.  Julia Roberts,
Madonna, Tiger Woods, Curt Schilling and Oprah are all Pilates enthusiasts and many others are
recognizing the benefits.  The New Jersey Nets have invested in Pilates equipment and became so
dependent on the method they had the equipment sent to their hotel during the 2002 NBA playoffs.

Pilates is not only for those with athletic prowess or unlimited funds.  It’s rehabilitative roots make
it easily adaptable for all who wish to try and the recent boom of mat classes make it much more
affordable.  Pilates videos have risen in popularity, however, it is difficult to gain the full benefit
without the proper instruction at least a few times before the use of the video.  The isometrics can be
tricky and the choreography complicated without an instructor to assist.

The Pilates Method strives to teach its students muscle control, balance, strength and coordination
as well as developing proper posture, minimizing back pain, and creating lean muscle.  As Joseph
Pilates told his own students, “In 10 sessions you feel the difference, in 20 you see the difference and
in 30 you’ll have a new body.”
